Breathe Your Way to Feeling Better With Inhaled Hydrogen

By Dr. Benjamin Busch, DO, MBA

December 16, 2022

You’ll breathe easy knowing you’re doing something good for your body with hydrogen-infused air. ViveWell’s inhaled hydrogen therapy has positive antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergy, anti-obesity, and anti-aging effects. You can alleviate ailments like asthma and seasonal allergies by including inhaled hydrogen therapy.

What is inhaled hydrogen?

Inhaled Hydrogen Therapy is a natural, drug-free treatment that leverages the benefits of hydrogen gas to help you feel better and live healthier.

Hydrogen gas is simply a combination of two hydrogen atoms (H2). It’s odorless and colorless. The gas has attracted the attention of many researchers worldwide for its unique properties. Hydrogen has therapeutic effects in over 170 human and animal disease models, including every organ of the human body. A major reason for this is that Hhelps to reverse oxidative stress and inflammation, which are at the root of virtually every disease and pathology.

Explore the relief: Benefits of Inhaled Hydrogen Therapy

Inhaled hydrogen is gaining popularity in healthcare because it is a clean, non-toxic gas that can be used to treat patients with many health conditions. Research from Loma Linda University reports that Hydrogen Therapy has the potential to help treat patients suffering from an impressive eight of the top ten diseases listed by the Centers for Disease Control.

Inhaled Hydrogen Therapy has been shown to treat and protect against over 170 conditions as a result of its many beneficial effects.

  • Reduced inflammation
  • Strengthened cellular health
  • Increased energy
  • Enhanced cognitive function
  • Boosted anti-aging effects (skin health and tone)
  • Recovered sleeping patterns
  • Improved weight management
  • Enhanced athletic performance
  • Decreased recovery time
  • Renewed anti-cancer and anti-tumor effect

How does it work?

Hydrogen has unique properties that allow it to easily penetrate cell membranes, including those found in the brain, to reach microscopic, subcellular compartments where its therapeutic effects can be felt.

What to expect during your session

Inhaling hydrogen gas is a simple and effective method for treating many illnesses. The hydrogen gas comes from a special generator and is delivered to you by nasal cannula — a standard tube in your nose commonly used to deliver oxygen. ViveWell uses a 2-4% hydrogen gas mixture for inhalation because it has a low flammability level and is easy to use. As you breathe, hydrogen is absorbed rapidly within 30 minutes of inhalation, and its presence in the body returns to baseline after 60 minutes. However, the gas sets off a cascade of healthy reactions at a cellular level throughout your body, with benefits lasting long after the hydrogen is gone.

How often can I breathe hydrogen?

The beauty of this treatment is that it can be done daily with increased therapeutic effects. Studies show it has sustained safety and cumulative benefits, making it an elegant treatment with numerous applications.

The science behind hydrogen inhalation

As early as 1975, researchers at Baylor University and Texas A&M reported that hydrogen therapy effectively reduced melanoma tumors in mice. However, it was not until 2007 that interest in hydrogen therapy began to grow. Scientists demonstrated that inhalation of hydrogen gas at low concentrations, or ingestion of an aqueous solution containing dissolved hydrogen, has therapeutic effects.

Specifically, inhaled hydrogen has been found to:

  • Selectively scavenge reactive radical molecules
  • Regulate certain antioxidant enzymes
  • Suppress inflammatory cytokines
  • Help cells avoid senescence and live longer
  • Induce cell death (apoptosis) for cells that are badly damaged
  • Exhibit potential in cancer treatment
  • Act synergistically with thermal therapy
  • Suppress tumor formation and growth
  • Increase anti-aging effects
  • Reduce allergies
  • Prevent and lower obesity

The benefits of hydrogen were initially thought to be due to its antioxidant ability to neutralize hydroxyl radicals. The exact mechanisms by which H2 reduces oxidative stress are still being explored. However, hydrogen activates the Nrf2 pathway, which regulates the transcription of over 200 cytoprotective genes. The activation of the Nrf2 pathway can affect the activities of phase II enzymes, including detoxification, antioxidant, antiapoptotic and metabolic processes. This may help explain why H2 can also help treat diabetes and obesity.

In a controlled trial for rheumatoid arthritis, hydrogen therapy improved disease symptoms for four weeks after hydrogen administration had stopped.  Some cell studies show that hydrogen pre-treatment can lessen the damage caused by toxins, radiation and other assaults even if the hydrogen has already dissipated from the system.
